Steps for All Licenses
1. Check Your Eligibility
- You are a natural person and at least 18 years old.
- You are a resident of the State of Florida.
- You are a U.S. citizen or legal alien with work authorization.
- You do not hold a resident insurance license in another state.
2. Complete Your Pre-Licensing Prerequisite
For most students, this means completing a FLDFS-approved pre-licensing course for the license you want. Some students may instead qualify using work experience, college credit, prior out-of-state license, or professional designations (see cards below for license-specific options).
3. Apply Online with DFS (MyProfile)
- Go to the Florida Department of Financial Services (DFS) website.
- Create or log in to your MyProfile account.
- Submit a "New Application" for your license (You must have pop-ups turned on)
- Answer all questions and pay required application/license fees - your application is not complete until you pay the fees.
- Remember: fingerprinting fees are paid separately to the vendor.
4. Send Proof of Your Prerequisite
- If you took your licensing or designation course through Online Training Institute (oltraining.com/oltschool.com) we will submit your course completion within 2 business days.
5. Get Fingerprinted
- Use the DFS-approved fingerprint vendor.
- Pay the vendor and complete fingerprinting as instructed.
- DFS must receive your background results before issuing a license.
6. Take the State Exam (If Required)
- After your application is approved, DFS will email you and direct you to check the messages in your MyProfile account.
- Your MyProfile message will include instructions to schedule the exam with the testing vendor.
- You must pass the exam; DFS must receive your passing result from the vendor before you can be licensed.
7. Check Status and Print Your License
- Log in to MyProfile to monitor the status of your application.
- Any deficiencies will be listed under the pending license type.
- Once all steps are complete, DFS will email your approval. Then go to MyProfile > Print Licenses and click the “Wallet” or “Letter” link to generate your license for printing.
8. Keep Your License Active
- Your license must be appointed by an insurer or agency to be valid. If it remains unappointed for 48 months, it will expire.
- You must complete your Continuing Education (CE) every 2 years by the end of your birth month. Your exact CE requirement is shown in MyProfile.
